Men's swimwear

Pool in February, beach holiday in July, a friend's pool at the weekend: the occasions could hardly be more different – yet the swimwear that comes along is often the same. That can work, but it does not always have to. What is right at the poolside when you are swimming lengths is often the wrong choice for the beach.

So we start with the question that actually helps: where are you going? In our collection of men's swimwear, you will find a wide selection: regular-fit swim shorts and mid-rise swimwear in different colours, with prints, logos, stripes or classic plain designs.

Swim briefs or swim shorts – what you will find here

The two terms do not mean the same thing. Close-fitting styles reduce water resistance and sit directly against the body – the logic of sporty lap swimming. Swim shorts have a looser cut, reach to around mid-thigh and give you much more freedom of movement.

Our focus is clearly on the second option: regular-fit swim shorts with a drawstring waistband and a mid rise. In other words, the cut that makes most sense at the beach, by the pool and at the outdoor pool – and that does not need an immediate extra layer after swimming because it also works on land like a normal pair of shorts.

Men's swimwear in different colours, from classic to bold

Blue is by far the biggest colour group in our selection. Black, grey, beige and white follow as the quieter shades that work with everything and do not look dated after a few summers.

Then things get brighter: green, aqua, orange, red, yellow and pink. Colours that rarely appear elsewhere in the wardrobe and belong at the beach for exactly that reason. One practical tip: if you choose one of them, keep the rest of the outfit calm. Bright swim shorts with a simple white T-shirt look much better than two colour statements fighting for attention.

Patterns and prints in our swimwear selection

This is where the real variety is. All-over prints are the largest group, from palm trees to floral motifs – exactly the kind of thing that fits a day at the beach. You will also find styles with text, badges or logos, colour blocking, animal motifs or stripes.

If you prefer to keep things understated, go for plain swimwear in black, blue or grey. These are the safe foundation that always works – and the better starting point if you are only just beginning to build your summer wardrobe.

Men's swimwear: finding the right size

Our swimwear comes in different sizes for every body type. More important than the number on the label, however, is what the waistband does: it should stay in place without digging in and should not slip when you come out of the water. The internal drawstring is there for exactly that reason – use it even if the waistband seems to fit without it at first.

A tip from experience: swimwear stretches slightly in the water. If you are between two sizes, the smaller one is usually the better choice. You can find all measurements in our size guide.

Swimwear and body shape: what really helps

A few principles hold up in practice. Closer-fitting cuts emphasise an athletic build. Looser swim shorts can soften the look around the stomach because they do not cling to the body. Shorter leg lengths visually lengthen the legs, while longer styles create a calmer look.

And dark colours have a slimming effect – an old rule, but a true one. Black and deep blue are therefore the safest starting points if you are unsure. Everything beyond that is a matter of taste, and at the beach your own taste should be allowed to decide.

Outdoor pool, sea or pool: choose swimwear for where you use it

Back to the question from the beginning. If you are swimming lengths, you want as little fabric as possible in the water and a waistband that stays in place when you push off – here, fit matters much more than the pattern.

At the sea, the calculation changes. There, your swimwear works like normal shorts for half the day: you walk along the beach in them, sit in the sand and go to get a drink. Regular-fit swim shorts with a drawstring are the obvious choice – and because they are on show for so long, they can afford to say a little more with colour.

At the pool or outdoor pool, the situation sits somewhere in between. Here, the main factor is how quickly the fabric dries again after swimming.

What makes good swimwear

The fabric is the invisible part of quality. Good swimwear is made from polyamide, polyester or blends containing elastane. The elastane helps the shorts keep their shape after repeated wear, while the synthetic fibres dry quickly and stand up to chlorine far better than natural fibres.

Quick-drying fabric is not a luxury but an everyday function: the trip home from the outdoor pool is simply more comfortable in dry shorts. You can see exactly what your chosen style is made from in the product description.

From the water back to the beach

Swimwear rarely goes out alone. Add a lightweight T-shirt for the walk to the kiosk, a cap for the sun, and something dry in your backpack for everything that should not get wet. That is how a quick jump in the water turns into a full day out.
