Men's denim shirts

A denim shirt has one quality no other shirt offers: it does not have to choose what it wants to be. Buttoned up, it is a shirt. Worn open over a T-shirt, it becomes a light jacket. That dual role is exactly what makes it one of the most frequently worn pieces in a wardrobe.

In our collection of men's denim shirts, you'll find the full range: close-fitting styles for a buttoned-up look, easy all-rounders for every day and noticeably roomier versions made to be worn open, in both long- and short-sleeve designs.

What is a denim shirt?

A denim shirt is a shirt made from denim – the same hard-wearing cotton fabric used for jeans. Typical details include two patch chest pockets, a classic shirt collar and often snap buttons instead of regular buttons.

The fabric itself is the real reason for its popularity: denim is durable, keeps its shape and develops its own character over the years. A denim shirt that has been worn for two years can look better than it did on day one – something you cannot say about many shirts.

From workwear to wardrobe

The denim shirt has its roots in 19th-century workwear. Denim was durable, tough and could handle whatever pioneers and cowboys put it through. Classic Western shirts with their distinctive yoke details and snap buttons come from the same tradition.

Over more than a hundred years, that functional garment has become a fashion classic – and a permanent part of the men's wardrobe. Surprisingly little has changed along the way: the chest pockets, collar and button placket are still in much the same places today.

Men's denim shirts: the fit makes the difference

With few other types of shirt does the cut make such a noticeable difference – our selection covers several fits:

  • Slim Fit: Close-fitting cuts sit neatly against the body and create a clean look. They are the right choice when the shirt is worn buttoned up, for evenings and for occasions when it is the only layer.
  • Regular & Comfort Fit: Easy all-rounders in the middle and the largest group. Comfort Fit is the safest starting point for a denim shirt if you are undecided between a closer and a looser look.
  • Relaxed & Roomier Fits: These have more volume and work better worn open over a tee. At the far end are Oversize cuts with the most room, which blend naturally into our overshirts.

How do you wear a denim shirt?

The most popular option is layering: wear the denim shirt open or half-open over a simple T-shirt. It works just as well in spring as on cool summer evenings and takes almost no planning.

Button it up and it becomes a proper shirt. Darker denim shirts look smarter and also work at the office – styles without a visible wash effect are the best choice for more formal occasions. A simple leather belt is all the accessory you need; this shirt does not require much else.

Denim on denim – done right

Pairing a denim shirt with jeans is known as double denim, and it has a worse reputation than it deserves. It works if you follow one rule: the washes need to be different. Wear a light shirt with darker jeans, or the other way around.

What you should avoid is an uninterrupted denim look in exactly the same shade – and, for smarter occasions, all-over denim in general. If you want an easier option, wear light chinos on the bottom. Earth tones look fresh and relaxed with a denim shirt.

Denim shirts beyond blue

Blue is the obvious choice for denim shirts and by far the largest part of our range. Within blue, the wash determines the effect: lighter washes for casual wear, darker ones whenever the outfit should look a little neater.

There are also white, black, grey, green and beige options. They are the more interesting choices if you already own a blue denim shirt – and they solve the double-denim question almost automatically, even if you add a denim jacket on top.
