Materials in men’s shirts – what the fabric changes
The fabric affects both how a shirt feels and how easy it is to care for. Cotton in a poplin weave gives a smooth, clean business look, linen feels lighter and cooler in summer, and blends with elastane add extra comfort. For colder days, flannel and corduroy work well as warmer layers. Look for good fabric quality: longer cotton fibres feel softer and tend to crease less, which helps keep the look sharp, especially when travelling.
The right formal shirt is the base of a confident business look. A few simple rules make the choice easy:
- Colour basics: Plain white and light blue are essentials. For more variety, go for subtle stripes, fine checks or understated grey tones.

Casual shirts – where the difference is
Casual shirts generally have a roomier cut, more texture in the fabric and more freedom for details. Denim, flannel, checks and understated patterns all belong here. Wear one with jeans in a regular fit or a pair of chinos for an easy look anywhere a strict dress code is not required.
For the colder part of the year, flannel or corduroy shirts are worth having. These fabrics add noticeable warmth and can replace a jumper under your jacket on milder winter days.
Non-iron shirts or classic cotton?
Non-iron shirts save time in the morning and can still look tidy after plenty of washes. The trade-off is that the fabric can feel a little smoother and less natural. If you prefer a softer drape, choose classic cotton and iron it while it is still slightly damp.
The middle ground is a non-iron construction with a high cotton content: easier to iron than traditional cotton, but more natural to the touch than a fully easy-care fabric. For most guys, it is a strong balance between effort and appearance.
Sizes and fits
