These fabrics breathe better, keep you warmer & hold their shape for longer than pure polyester coats, which can start to look worn more quickly. Short coats – the shorter option
A short coat is the cropped brother of the traditional wool coat. It usually finishes around the hips or just above them. That makes it practical when you are driving & more versatile for everyday wear, because it works with both a suit & jeans.
If you want a coat mainly as an everyday outer layer rather than for formal occasions, a short coat is often the smarter choice. It feels less strict than a classic wool coat & fits naturally into a wider range of outfits.
Trench coats: the lightweight classic for in-between seasons
A trench coat is the lighter alternative to a heavy wool coat. Usually made from cotton or a blended fabric, often in beige or muted colours, it comes with a classic collar & an easy drape. It is ideal for spring & autumn when a thick puffer jacket feels too warm but a casual transitional jacket feels too relaxed.
Almost anything works with a trench coat: chinos, tailored trousers or jeans. A beige trench immediately gives a more mature feel & creates a calm contrast to a relaxed sweatshirt or roll-neck underneath. Materials: which men’s coat suits your style?
The fabric of your coat has a big impact on how it feels, how it looks & when it works best.
- Wool & virgin wool: classic, refined & naturally temperature regulating – the traditional choice for a men’s coat.
- Cotton: ideal for transitional weather & milder winter days, especially for trench coats.
- Wool-polyester blends: easier to care for, more crease resistant & practical for everyday use.
- Cotton-polyester blends: a good option for lighter styles & transitional looks.
Choose the fabric around how you will wear the coat most. Lots of business use points towards wool. Transitional dressing works well with cotton or lighter blends. Everyday wear often makes a wool blend or other easy-care mixed fabric the practical choice.
Business or casual – what your coat says
A black or grey coat immediately leans business. Beige & brown sit comfortably between office & off-duty. Blue adds a slightly more individual touch. Length – how long should a men’s coat be?
A classic wool coat usually finishes just above or just below the knee. A short coat ends around hip height. If you are shorter, a shorter length can keep your proportions balanced. If you are tall, you can easily go below the knee without the coat looking oversized.
Length also affects everyday practicality. Longer coats feel more formal, but they can make driving & cycling less convenient. Shorter coats are more practical, although they give up some of the traditional long-coat silhouette.
Collars & details: the small things that shape the look
The collar changes the whole character of a coat. At JACK & JONES, you will mainly find three directions: a classic lapel that works well with tailoring, a high-closing collar for a more modern look without a tie & a wider fly-away collar that gives the coat more visual presence.
A hood pushes the coat further towards casual & functional dressing. Some styles come with a classic hood or a fur-trim-inspired option for extra winter attitude.
Do not ignore the buttons either. Horn-effect or metal buttons usually look more elevated than basic plastic versions. If details matter to you, changing the buttons can be a small adjustment with a surprisingly visible result.
Fit & size
A coat can sit slightly roomier than a jacket because you need space for a blazer or knit underneath. Check the shoulder first: the seam should sit where your shoulder naturally ends. If you are unsure, try the coat with the layer you actually plan to wear underneath & check the size guide.
Sleeve length is the second test. With your arms relaxed by your sides, around one centimetre of shirt or blazer sleeve can sit below the coat sleeve for a clean layered finish.
