What Ski Wear Do You Need?
Going on ski trips can be an expensive treat, which makes it important to invest in high-quality, functional ski wear that will last for years. A classic ski wardrobe is typically built around three layers: the base layer, the mid layer, and the outer layer. The base layer is designed to keep you warm, this is your thermal underwear, also called base layers, consisting of thermal bottoms, tops, and ski socks. These are usually made from materials like nylon, polyester, or merino wool, all chosen to retain heat. The mid layer is typically a fleece or similar garments, crucial for keeping your upper body warm and regulating your temperature. The outer layer includes your ski jacket, ski pants, ski gloves, hats, and potentially other gear such as goggles and a helmet. Ski jackets and pants should be wind- and waterproof, but also breathable, so they remain comfortable in both cold and warmer conditions, while still allowing you to move freely on the slopes. Beyond jackets and pants, it’s important to choose the right ski gear, like goggles, gloves, neckwarmer, and hat, to complete your look and ensure maximum comfort throughout your holiday.
Tips and Tricks for Choosing Ski Wear
When picking out ski clothing, there are a few things you should consider before making your purchase.
Ski Jackets:
When choosing a ski jacket, it’s important that it has a small sleeve pocket for your lift pass. This makes the lift ride much easier, as you don’t have to struggle to get your pass scanned.
Ski Pants:
Many ski pants come with or without suspenders, and the choice usually depends on personal preference and fit.
Pros of ski pants with suspenders:
- Stays securely in place and won’t slide down, even with lots of movement
- Provide better coverage of the lower back, reducing the risk of cold or snow getting in
- Less dependent on the waistband fit
- Increased comfort throughout the day because they don’t need to be tightened at the waist in order to stay in place
Cons of ski pants with suspenders:
- Can be more difficult to take off, especially when using the toilet
- May feel warmer on the upper body, which can be uncomfortable if you tend to overheat easily
- Suspenders can be irritating or slip down if not adjusted properly
- Less “casual” if you want to use the pants off the slopes
Pros of ski pants without suspenders:
- Quick and easy to take off
- More “casual” and easier to wear outside the slopes
- Less warmth around the lower back/upper body, which is ideal if you get warm easily
Cons of ski pants without suspenders:
- Increased risk of the pants sliding down or feeling too tight around the waist
- Higher chance of snow or cold getting in, especially at the lower back if they slip down
- Greater need for a perfect fit at the waist and hips to avoid the pants sliding down
Ski Gloves
Choosing the right gloves comes down to one question: mittens or finger gloves? If your hands get cold fast, mittens are your best ally. They keep your fingers together, locking in warmth and keeping you comfortable when the temperature drops. Finger gloves, on the other hand, are ideal for skiers who want a better grip or more freedom of movement for tightening ski boots or adjusting gear. However it’s important to keep in mind that finger gloves often come with more seams, which can increase the risk of cold air and moisture seeping through.
